A trip to Meachrey.

by Dominic Stafford

Meachrey is a semi remote floating village west of Siem Reap. Few tourists know about the place, and it’s comparatively cheap to rent a boat here. Meachreys proximity to my room makes it a great afternoon retreat from the dusty town. As the Tonle Sap lake rises, the floating houses moor around what is an ‘island pagoda’ and during the dry season they are forced to relocate closer to the Tonle Sap itself. I originally found this village on Google Earth, and scouted it out during the dry season. Nowadays it’s in the Lonely Planet guide book, but it is still a peaceful escape.
