The forgotten cremation site.

by Dominic Stafford

While spending a few days in Anlong Veng District, well known for being the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge, I made the trip up Phnom Dengrek, to see Pol Pot’s cremation site. At the moment, at the top of the ridge, adjacent to the Thai border, a huge casino is nearing completion, and the site where Pol Pot’s cremation took place is now a small piece of wasteland bang in the middle, even spelled wrong!

With construction workers using a track that runs past it, this historical site seemed completely forgotten. Even when asked, one worker was unable to confirm if the clearing I had found was indeed the correct place. Surreal.
