The ‘Kuyon’

by Dominic Stafford

Managed to travel the 65km from Sisophon to Banteay Chhmar by hitching rides on several small tractors, known in Cambodia as ‘Kuyon’. Half the time the road was so bumpy that I couldn’t let go of the rail to take any photos, but I had some small windows of opportunity on the smoother patches. On the way back, I hitched a ride with the CMAC mine clearance crew. On the kuyons, especially, we needed only to offer a little money as we got off, and some turned payment down, which was so humble, if not a little silly of them. I would definitely do it all again, but time is needed…
