Prasat Preah Vihear.
by Dominic Stafford
The temple of Preah Vihear was awarded to Cambodia late 2013, after the fighting over ownership between Cambodia and Thailand throughout 2011 and earlier. There is still a very strong military presence, and the surrounding area is mostly military bases. There are active encampments in the forest all around the temple and each tier is always busy with soldiers. However, they seem to spend most of the day waiting for gifts of cigarettes and the like from Cambodian tourists.
The view from the clifftop is incredible, with mist frequently drifting in and blanketing the temple. The air is fresh and cool, providing relief from the heat below. The trip up and down is also a very interesting part of the visit.
The shots below represent Preah Vihear temple as it is in 2014.
