the milk scam.
by Dominic Stafford
I’ve photographed this young woman and her unwary accomplice before.
- She prowls the tourist area of Old Market, expressing a need for ‘formula, not money’.
- She leads you to a local shop working in cahoot.
- She asks you to buy a tin of milk formula sometimes at an extortionate price.
- Once you are gone, she sells the tin back to the store, and the money is split 50/50.
I wanted to capture more of the process of this scam. At $25 for the baby milk powder, we didn’t wish to photograph the entire process, so we walked out. She became extremely angry! I would have captured the end result but half a bottle of baby milk was being hurled my way…
